Welcome to; SHERREY'S SAUCES & SUCH. We are a small, couple-owned business that grows and sells organic produce, handmakes and offers award-winning pickles and preserves, and produces homemade dog and cat treats. This is a small account of how our business came to be what it is today. We both remember enjoying our grandmother's and relative's homemade jams, conserves, preserves, and pickles while growing up. As a teenager, I enjoyed making pickles with my mother, and fondly anticipated the alluring scents of mustard, spices, and vinegar that permeated the summer air on George Street every year, when our neighbour, Mrs. Murphy, began harvesting her vegetables and bottling her delicious pickles and relishes! Before too long, I became very interested in researching and collecting our familiesí favourite, heirloom recipes for the preserves that we had all grown so accustomed to expect on our dinner table. For previous generations, pickling and preserving fresh, homegrown produce was a necessity, indeed. Before refrigeration, and the importation and availability of year-around produce, our ancestors had to stock their pantries, cupboards, and mud cellars with jars of preserves, pickles, jams, jellies, conserves and such, in order to make their garden sustain everyone over the long winter season. Yet, I do believe that they must have felt a sense of great accomplishment while selecting various varieties of produce that thrived in their respective areas, planting seeds, organically tending plants, harvesting fruits and vegetables, and preserving a bounty which could then be shared with loved ones and friends. Today, even though the techniques of food preservation have changed very little, it is now perceived as a gourmet hobby that is growing in popularity among those who want to process and preserve food, simply because they enjoy it. Although it can certainly be a long dayís work, I also began to use the opportunity that my hobby of pickling and preserving allowed, to further appreciate the culinary contributions that my relatives made. As well as realizing the importance of preserving the heirloom, family recipes passed down to me, I also learned to enjoy sharing ěthe fruits of my labour, with many of my friends and family. They became accustomed to receiving a basket of homemade preserves, jams, and pickles from me at Christmas and for other special occasions, while I was on a studentís budget while attending nursing school! Long after I finished my education, and was able to buy gifts, everyone still expected and requested my preserves, and told me I should be making them to sell! Especially the Maritime Mustard Pickles! Whether it was fate, destiny, or perhaps only coincidence, I met my other half and one of the first things I noticed, is the fact that he had a great deal of land on his farm that could be used to grow produce for my preserves!! Luckily, he enjoyed gardening and horticulture, and he also quickly learned to enjoy my pickles and preserves. We made the decision to pool our resources and start a business where our families treasured herloom recipes, as well as our own unique creations reflective of contemporary trends, could be used to prepare the best pickles, preserves, and homemade cuisine for others to enjoy. It is vitally important to us that our pickles, preserves, sauces, and such, are reflective of the attention to detail and high quality that our relatives were therefore, all of our products are hand made, in small batches, with the freshest of ingredients and do not contain additives, fillers, preservatives, chemicals, or artificial flavours. The majority of our preserves are made using our own organic produce, grown on-site, which has been hand- selected at its peak, and bottled within hour of picking, so we are able to offer products that have truly retained natures freshest flavours, textures, and aromas. SHERREY'S SAUCES & SUCH will continue to develop new and innovative homemade delights to add to our varied product line, and we look forward to sharing our favourites with you.
